dermot foley landscape architects

the city of luxembourg sought landscape and urban design solutions for the re-development of luxembourg's main train station and the districts of bonnvoie and hollerich. dermot foley landscape architects, with bernard seymour la, krystallia kamvasinou and urban initiatives were selected to compete with 11 other design teams from ten countries. The team was awarded joint second place, beating strong competition such as west 8 from rotterdam.

the main objective of the proposal, was to use open space to re-instate historic links and provide a new back-drop for a range of proposed cultural, commercial and infrastructure programmes. the main landscape element was designed as a 'skin', 'stretched' across the district to facilitate conflicting functional requirements in a pragmatic way, while, at the same time, acting as a dramatic new cultural milieu. inspiration was drawn from the unique geomorphology of the city of luxembourg.
